Not-so-strange Bedfellows: Faith and Business

by | Sep 25, 2014

On September 22, the firm sponsored the first luncheon of the year in SMU/Perkins School of Theology’s annual “Faith and Business” series.  Now in its sixth year, the non-denominational series challenges attendees to reflect on the intersection of public life and personal faith, from a business perspective.  Luncheons are held twice per semester, and feature two co-presenters, a community leader from the world of business and a Perkins faculty member.  The co-presenters share their thoughts on how personal beliefs may inform business practice, each from his or her own unique perspective.   Past business community presenters include Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings, Dallas attorney Mike Boone, former White House Counsel Harriet Miers, philanthropist Morton Meyerson, space traveler Anousheh Ansari and American Airlines Chairman/CEO Thomas Horton.

The September 22nd program, entitled “The Role of Faith in Business,” featured Ruth Fitzgibbons, Principal of public relations firm The Richards Group and former editor-in-chief of D Magazine.   Ms. Fitzgibbons’ insightful remarks were followed by a lyrical presentation by Dr. Alyce McKenzie, Perkins’ Le Van Professor of Preaching & Worship and Director of its new Center for Preaching Excellence.  These dynamic women emphasized the importance of paying attention to the “God moments” in often frenetic professional and personal lives.
