Foundations + Non-Profits

PalterLaw’s non-profit, social innovation and community impact expertise, connections and initiatives distinguish it from other law firms. We are committed to serving as change agents, bringing about measurable, meaningful and lasting change in our community. It is at the core of who we are, what we do, and why we do it. As a firm and as individuals, we are heavily engaged in our community. So we know very well that community involvement not only strengthens our social fabric, but also weaves together like-minded people involved in many businesses and other endeavors. We are firmly committed to encouraging our clients to improve both their bottom line and the bottom line of their fellow community members by pitching in on the issues that impact us all.

Foundations

Foundations, whether family, operating, or business donor, are a significant part of the funding community for many non-profits, and increasingly other impact organizations as well.  At PalterLaw, our knowledge of the operations of foundations, and the opportunities and challenges they face, enables us to provide helpful advice to them in such matters as:

  • Dealing with the Internal Revenue Service, from the beginning to the end of the exemption process
  • Complying with minimum distribution requirements
  • Crafting effective grant agreements
  • Completing transactions with insiders
  • Addressing disqualifying investments
  • Negotiating family management
  • When necessary, representing foundations in litigation against those disputing a will or trust

Non-Profits

Non-profit organizations provide critical services to people throughout our community.  Our business and finance lawyers have worked with many non-profits over several years on numerous fronts.  We also help our non-profit clients implement social innovation and enterprise within the non-profit space, thereby lessening their reliance on traditional funders and enhancing the services they provide.  Regardless of the type of non-profit our clients are involved with – charity, foundation, trade association, social club, school or neighborhood association – we provide sound, dedicated representation.
